Excursion "clay mining and clay preparation" - 6th Raw Materials Day of Rhineland-Palatinate
On 1 July 2010, at the initiative of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economy, Transportation,
Agriculture and Viticulture, and the trade associations and quarrying industry, this year's Raw Materials Day took place in the Westerwald Ceramics Museum. As the winner of the Raw Materials Award for Innovation in 2004, Sibelco Deutschland supported the 2010 Raw Materials Day by organising a guided excursion with the theme "clay mining and clay preparation.

Sibelco Deutschland invited all interested parties on an excursion to the Hohewiese ball clay deposit located between Mogendorf and Siershahn. The participants experienced the way in which the clay is extracted in the quarries and then processed in the adjacent clay preparation plant. Amidst the various clay strata the visitors could watch how the clay was being selectively mined by 45-ton hydraulic excavators and homogenized in the blending plant. Hohewiese quarry impressively demonstrates the typical ball clay geology of the Westerwald.
Later in the excursion, the participants visited one of Sibelco Deutschland’s preparation plants called “Kannenbäckerland” in Höhr-Grenzhausen. They were shown the processing of raw materials into liquid and plastic ceramic bodies or spray dried granulates. In addition to Sibelco Deutschland’s Westerwald ball clays, a wide range of other minerals are used according to specific customer requirements.
Sibelco Deutschland GmbH produces high-quality clays, kaolins, feldspar and ceramic bodies in more than 20 locations throughout Germany. These are used worldwide, mainly in the ceramic industry.
